    TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Jan. 21 – Michigan Writers Cooperative Press has selected three area poets to be published in its annual chapbook series, the biggest publication effort of the three-year-old innovative press.
Individual books of poetry by Catherine Turnbull, Holly Wren Spaulding, and Leigh Fairey will be released on April 10 at a reading and reception at the Interlochen Arts Academy Writing House.
    The Cooperative Press solicits manuscripts annually from all literary genres but restricts submissions to writers who have not previously published a book-length manuscript. A jury of experienced writers reads the submissions “blind.”
Michigan Writers launched the Cooperative Press in 2005 to give its members another avenue to publication and support emerging writers, says organization President Aaron Stander. Contest rules require selected authors to share in publication costs and marketing efforts. In return, the authors benefit from the prestige of being published by a press that prints only carefully selected manuscripts, Stander says.
The 2008 releases will be the third set of small, paperback chapbooks published by the Cooperative Press. Last year, the press published poetry collections by local writers Duncan Sprattmoran and Todd Mercer. The first titles, released in 2005, were a collection of short stories by Trinna Frever and a collection of poetry by Michael Callaghan.
     Michigan Writers is a membership organization dedicated to providing opportunities for networking, professional growth and publication for writers of all ages and skill levels in Northwest Lower Michigan.
