Dear Members:
Lots of news to share, but first a reminder about Michigan Writers On the Air. The show runs Saturday (Nov. 24) at 7 p.m. and again at 1 p.m. on Sunday at WICA, 91.5 FM. This month's guests are historian Glenn Ruggles and poet Fleda Brown. Glenn will be talking about his oral history of Antrim County,
Voices on the Water. And Flelda, the former poet laureate of Delaware, will be discussing and reading some of her recent work.
Fleda BrownHosts Ann Bardens-McClellan and Aaron Stander produce the show, which runs the last Saturday of every month at 7 p.m. with a repeat airing on the following Sunday at 1 p.m. on WICA, 91.5 FM. Michigan Writers On the Air is one of our proudest endeavors. Congratulations and thanks to Aaron and Ann!
Speaking of Fleda Brown, we are delighted to welcome her to the board of directors of Michigan Writers. Professor Brown is the author of six collections of poetry, and her work has appeared in
Poetry,
Kenyon Review,
American Poetry Review, and
Georgia Review. From 2001 to 2007 she served as the poet laureate of Delaware. Both she and her husband recently retired from the University of Delaware English Department and will make their home in Traverse City.
Steven Lewis recently resigned after six years on the board. He has given generously of his time and energy to help Michigan Writers expand services to the membership, including his service as a judge and editor for the cooperative press and providing leadership in the development of the new website. His knowledge, leadership, and wise counsel will be missed.
In other news, thanks to the efforts of board member Bill Corbett, we have secured a grant to fund in full the production of the
Dunes Review, which we sponsor with the Glen Arbor Art Association. The GAAA has underwritten the cost of the
Dunes Review since its inception 10 years ago. Now the GAAA will no longer have that expense and Michigan Writers will be able to keep proceeds from sales and subscriptions to fund further development of the journal. Read more on our website.
Finally, two more reminders:
Poetry workshop with Jack Ridl at 7 p.m. on Dec. 6 in University Center. Free and open to the public. Bring a friend. Bring a teen-ager.
