Free writing workshop in February; discounts for Interlochen & Bear River conferences this spring

PLEASE NOTE CORRECT DATE FOR FLEDA BROWN'S WRITING WORKSHOP: FEB 27!

Dear Members:

Yep, it's cabin fever season here in Northwester Lower Michigan. Michigan Writers recommends this cure: a reading and a workshop with new MW board member and award-winning poet Fleda Brown. Fleda, an esteemed professor at the University of Delaware, had been poet laureate of Delaware until she retired to Traverse City last fall.

Feb. 18: Fleda is guest poet this month for Open Mic Poetry at Horizon Books in Traverse City. She will read new poems as well as selections from her most recent book, Reunion, published in 2007. Open Mic meets the third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. For more information on Fleda and her poetry, visit www.fledabrown.com.

Feb 27: The next free writing workshop sponsored by Michigan Writers -- "What have I got here, a poem, or creative non-fiction?" -- will pique the creativity of poets, memoirists and essayists alike. Fleda Brown will lead a discussion of the aesthetics of the two genres, what each is able to do better than the other. Says Fleda: "Bring along an idea you've been thinking about working with -- not a finished product, not necessarily anything on paper at all -- just an idea, a subject, a thought, or a feeling. We'll get some small beginning on paper during the workshop and you'll have a chance to talk about it." The workshop begins at 7 p.m. in Room 209 of the University Center of Northwestern Michigan College, 2200 Dendrinos Drive, Traverse City.

Two other excellent regional workshops this spring offer special deals for MW members. Registration deadlines are fast approaching, so act soon to take advantage of these special offers.

April 11 & 12, Between the Lakes: A symposium for writers and educators. Michigan Writers members pay $99 instead of the standard $149 registration fee, a $50 savings made possible through a grant secured by MW board member William Corbett. For more information about the symposium at Interlochen Center for the Arts, visit the ICA website . Registration deadline is March 1.

May 29-June 2, Bear River Writers Conference. Members of Michigan Writers are eligible for either partial or full scholarships to this residential workshop sponsored by University of Michigan and held at Camp Michigania on Walloon Lake. Applications are now being accepted. Registration deadline is April 1, so if you're interested, we urge you to visit the Bear River website soon. Once in the site, click the "Scholarships" button. Thanks again to Bill for securing a grant for scholarship dollars to divide among MW applicants.

One more note: We've eliminated the login and password function on our website, which allowed members to make direct postings -- and which practically nobody used! But we're happy to continue receiving information the old-fashioned way. Send us an email about your events, publications and accomplishments and we'll post it on the website. Thanks, and write on!
