Sleeping Bear Dunes Artist in Residence Program
The Lakeshore itself operates an Artist in Residence Program that allows professional American writers, composers, and visual artists to utilize time and space within the Lakeshore to be inspired by it. The program provides rent-free use of a campground or park house for a three-week stretch of time.

Community Reading of Whitman’s “Song of Myself” on Oct. 6
Michigan Writers will present a reading of Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself”. The poem, a part of “Leaves of Grass” and consisting of 52 cantos, will be read in its entirety at the State Theatre, October 6 at 1 pm. Admission will be free of charge.

Marla Kay Houghteling Workshop in Bay View
Marla Kay Houghteling, a Michigan Writers member, will conduct a workshop “Writing Poems from the World in Front of You” at the Bay View Association (a Chautauqua on Lake Michigan) on July 9, 11, 16, 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. The sessions will include using model poems as guides for writing one’s own poems by drawing on observation and memory.
